Now Foods Glucomannan – glucomannan from konjac root

Now Foods Glucomannan is a food supplement whose main ingredient is glucomannan from konjac root – a water-soluble dietary fibre. Each capsule provides 575 mg glucomannan and three capsules, i.e. one serving, provide 1725 mg. The bottle contains 180 capsules, or 60 servings. The product is developed by NOW Foods, a family-owned US company that has been making supplements since 1968. The capsule of the product sold in the EU is made of bovine gelatine, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

What is glucomannan?

Glucomannan is a natural polysaccharide obtained from the tuber-like root of the konjac plant, which grows in Asia. In Japan and other Asian countries konjac flour has long been used in cooking, for example to make konjac noodles and jelly. Chemically, glucomannan consists of glucose and mannose units that form a long chain.

A characteristic property of glucomannan is its ability to bind a large amount of water. In contact with liquid it swells and forms a thick gel. This is why the capsules must be taken with plenty of water – at least 240 ml per serving. Without enough liquid the product may swell in the throat and cause blockage or choking.

How to use?

The manufacturer recommends taking 3 capsules 1 to 2 times daily with at least 240 ml (8 oz) of water 30–45 minutes before a meal. Swallow the capsules one at a time and drink a glass of water straight away. Do not exceed the recommended amount. At the recommended use, one bottle lasts 30–60 days, depending on whether you take one or two servings a day.

Ingredients and storage

In addition to glucomannan, the capsules contain a bovine gelatine capsule shell, cellulose, silica and vegetable magnesium stearate. The product is not manufactured with wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients, but it is produced in a facility that processes other ingredients containing these allergens. The bottle contains a freshness packet that must not be eaten. The colour of the capsules may vary naturally. After opening, store the bottle in a cool, dry place and keep it tightly closed.
