Butyric acid, also known as butanoic acid, is an organic compound classified as a short-chain saturated fatty acid. In the human body, it is naturally produced during the fermentation of undigested carbohydrates – its production is mainly associated with the consumption of resistant starch, although other compounds such as inulin, lactose and polyols also contribute to this process. In food, butyric acid is found in milk, dairy products and silage, but the amount obtained from food is limited. Sodium butyrate is the sodium salt of butyric acid. According to the manufacturer, obtaining butyric acid from external sources is challenging because the compound is digested in the upper parts of the digestive tract.
