What is N-acetyl-L-cysteine?

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is an acetylated form, or derivative, of the amino acid L-cysteine. In the NAC molecule an acetyl group is attached to the amino group of cysteine – hence the name N-acetyl. How to use?
