Now Foods Ginkgo Biloba Double Strength is a food supplement in vegetarian capsules, each containing 120 mg of standardised ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) leaf extract and 250 mg of eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) root. The extract is standardised to at least 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, and the drug-to-extract ratio is 50:1. The manufacturer calls it a double strength product because the capsule contains twice as much ginkgo extract as the regular NOW 60 mg product. The recommended daily dose is one capsule and the bottle contains 100 capsules, so one pack lasts for more than three months.

Ginkgo and eleuthero

Ginkgo is an ancient tree species whose fan-shaped, two-lobed leaves gave the tree its botanical name biloba. The tree originates from China and today it is widely planted in parks and city streets all over the world. Food supplements use an extract made from ginkgo leaves, standardised to two groups of compounds that occur naturally in the leaves – flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. The extract ratio of 50:1 means that about 50 parts of plant material are used to obtain one part of extract. Eleuthero, also known as Siberian ginseng, is a thorny shrub native to Northeast Asia, including the Russian Far East, whose root is used in food supplements. No nutrient reference value has been established for ginkgo extract or eleuthero.

How to use?

Take one capsule a day, preferably with a meal, and swallow it with a glass of water or another drink. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you are taking medication, especially anticonvulsants, antidepressants or medicines that may affect bleeding time, consult a physician before using the product.
