Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil is a food supplement in which every softgel contains 500 mg of krill oil (NKO®). Krill is a small marine crustacean, and its oil differs from fish oil in composition: in addition to the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, krill oil contains phospholipids and the naturally occurring carotenoid astaxanthin. Two softgels provide 1000 mg of krill oil, including 250 mg of omega-3 fatty acids, of which 135 mg is eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 60 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The container holds 60 softgels. The product is made by NOW Foods, an American family-owned company founded in 1968.

Omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and astaxanthin

EPA and DHA are long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids found mainly in seafood and oily marine fish. In krill oil these fatty acids are bound to phospholipids – two softgels contain 450 mg of phospholipids, almost half of the amount of krill oil. Astaxanthin is a reddish carotenoid that occurs naturally in krill; two softgels contain 360 µg of it in esterified form.

The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA. Two softgels provide a total of 195 mg of EPA and DHA, four softgels 390 mg and the maximum recommended daily dose of six softgels 585 mg. You therefore get 250 mg of EPA and DHA when you take at least four softgels a day.

How to use?

Take 2 softgels one to three times a day with food, i.e. 2–6 softgels a day in total. Six softgels is the recommended daily dose, which should not be exceeded. If you take other food supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids at the same time, take their amounts into account as well. The container lasts 30 days at two softgels a day and 10 days at six softgels a day. After opening, store the bottle in a cool, dry place.

Now Foods Neptune Krill Oil is suitable for adults who rarely eat seafood or oily marine fish, or who prefer krill oil to fish oil. The product is intended for adults only. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication – especially anticoagulant or anti-platelet medications – or have a medical condition, consult a physician before use. Krill oil is derived from crustaceans, so the product is not suitable for people with a seafood allergy. The softgel shell is made of bovine gelatin, so the product is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

According to the manufacturer, it is tested to be free of potentially harmful levels of contaminants such as PCBs, dioxins, mercury and other heavy metals. The country of origin is the United States of America, where the product is packaged and quality tested. Natural colour variation of the softgels may occur.
