What is TMG, or betaine?

Trimethylglycine is a derivative of the amino acid glycine with three methyl groups attached to its nitrogen atom. The substance came to be called betaine because it was first isolated from sugar beet, whose Latin name is Beta vulgaris. In food, betaine occurs naturally in, for example, beetroot, spinach, wheat bran, wheat germ, quinoa and seafood. Betaine anhydrous is a white crystalline substance that readily binds moisture from the air – which is why NOW Foods recommends always keeping the bottle tightly closed and leaving the freshness packet in the bottle.

How to use?

According to the EU label, the recommended daily dose is three tablets, providing 3 g of TMG. The manufacturer's directions are to take 1–3 tablets twice a day, preferably with food – for example, one tablet with breakfast and two tablets with dinner. Swallow the tablets with a glass of water. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Close the bottle tightly right after taking the tablets, as moisture may affect product stability, and leave the freshness packet in the bottle.
