Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey is a ready-to-mix protein powder based on a blend of three forms of whey protein: whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate. Whey protein is a milk protein that is separated during cheese making and is one of the most widely used protein sources in sports nutrition. The product comes in many flavours – from chocolate and vanilla variants to fruity options. Flavoured variants are sweetened with sweeteners, while the unflavoured variant contains only the whey protein blend with an emulsifier.

Nutrition per serving

According to the EU label, one scoop of powder (30–32 g, depending on the flavour) provides 24 g of protein and 111–119 kcal. A serving contains 1.2–1.5 g of fat, 1.3–3.1 g of carbohydrate and 1.0–1.3 g of sugars. Depending on the flavour, 100 g of powder contains 74–80 g of protein, so protein makes up most of the product’s energy content. According to the manufacturer, a serving naturally contains approximately 5.5 g of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) and 4 g of glutamine and glutamic acid. As it contains milk and soy, the product is not suitable for people with milk protein or soy allergy. The Cookies & Cream flavour also contains wheat.

How to fit it into your diet

The manufacturer recommends drinking Gold Standard 100% Whey in the morning and/or within 30 minutes before or immediately after training. The powder can be mixed with cold water, but it also works well in smoothies, porridge, protein balls and muffins – an easy way to add protein to everyday meals. The unflavoured variant is a good choice if you prefer to choose the taste of your food or drink yourself.
