Allnutrition Berberine is a food supplement containing Indian barberry (Berberis aristata) root extract. One capsule provides 500 mg of extract, of which 10 mg is berberine. The product is taken as one capsule a day, so the 90 capsules last for three months. The supplement is made by the Polish company SFD S.A., which also owns the Allnutrition brand.

Berberine is a yellow plant alkaloid found in the roots, stems and bark of several barberry species. Indian barberry is a thorny shrub native to the Himalayan region, and its root is used as the raw material for the extract. The extract in Allnutrition Berberine is made specifically from the root of the plant, and the berberine content is clearly stated on the label – so you know exactly how much extract and berberine each capsule contains.

The formula is simple: besides the extract, the capsule contains only two anti-caking agents, silicon dioxide and magnesium salts of fatty acids, which keep the powder free-flowing. The capsule shell is made of gelatin and coloured with calcium carbonate. Store the product in a dry place protected from light and always close the container properly after use.

The label shows two figures: 500 mg is the amount of Indian barberry root extract, and 10 mg is the amount of berberine contained in that extract. The berberine content of the extract is therefore 2%. Many other berberine products state the amount of pure berberine or berberine hydrochloride instead, so when comparing products it is worth looking at both the extract and the berberine amounts separately.
