Scitec Nutrition 100% Casein Complex – a blend of micellar casein and calcium caseinate

Scitec Nutrition 100% Casein Complex is a flavoured protein drink powder in which all of the protein comes from casein. The main part of the blend is micellar casein concentrate (51–53%), and the second protein source is calcium caseinate (34–38%). According to the manufacturer's nutrition table, one 30 g serving provides 22 g of protein and 106 kcal of energy, with 1.8 g of carbohydrate, of which 0.9 g sugars, and 0.8 g of fat.

The amino acid L-glutamine and taurine have been added to the protein – 200 mg of each per serving – as well as the plant enzymes papain and bromelain (12 mg of each per serving). The pack contains 920 g of powder, i.e. 30 servings. Sportlab offers two flavours: Belgian chocolate and vanilla.

Casein – the main protein in milk

Together with whey protein, casein is one of the two large groups of milk proteins and makes up roughly 80% of the total protein content of milk. What mainly distinguishes casein from whey protein is that in milk it occurs as tiny particles called micelles and that it coagulates in an acidic environment. Casein is also what curd cheese and cheese are made from. The manufacturer recommends 100% Casein Complex as an evening drink rather than as a post-workout protein drink.

The product uses two forms of casein. In micellar casein concentrate, the casein has retained the micellar structure typical of milk, whereas calcium caseinate is a calcium compound of casein. According to the manufacturer, these forms differ in their structure and chemical properties.

According to the manufacturer's nutrition table, 100 g of powder contains 75 g of protein, 6.1 g of carbohydrate and 2.7 g of fat, with 352 kcal of energy – so most of the product's energy comes from protein.

How to use?

Mix 1 serving (30 g, i.e. 1 scoop, which is about 3 heaped tablespoons) of powder with 350 ml of water and shake well in a shaker. The manufacturer recommends drinking 1 serving before bedtime. If you drink one serving a day, a 920 g pack lasts 30 days.

The product is not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Who is it for?

100% Casein Complex is suitable for adults who want to add protein to their daily diet and prefer to have their protein drink in the evening. It is also a good choice for those looking for a flavoured casein drink with only 0.9 g of sugars per serving.

The powder is made from milk and contains milk, so it is not suitable for people with a milk protein allergy. Both flavours contain sweeteners, and the creamer also contains sugars (glucose syrup, sucrose). The vanilla flavour contains the colour tartrazine, which may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.

Available flavours

Both flavours are sweetened with acesulfame K and sucralose and thickened with xanthan gum. The manufacturer states a protein content of 22 g per serving for the Belgian chocolate flavour and 23 g per serving for the vanilla flavour; the nutrition table follows the manufacturer's official table. According to the manufacturer, the product is gluten free (in accordance with European Union regulations). Made in a plant that also processes foods containing milk, egg, soy, peanuts, nuts, celery, fish, crustaceans, molluscs and sulphur dioxide.
