What is citrulline?

Citrulline is an organic chemical compound classified as a non-protein amino acid, a derivative of ornithine. Together with L-arginine and L-ornithine, citrulline participates in the urea cycle. It is considered an endogenous amino acid that can be produced in the human body through natural synthesis.

The name derives from the Latin word 'citrullus' meaning watermelon, as it was the first food source from which the amino acid was isolated. Citrulline can also be found in melons, pumpkins and cucumbers.
