Mutant Big Greens – drink powder with greens and berries

Mutant Big Greens is a food supplement in powder form that makes a flavoured drink. One scoop contains four blends: land and sea greens, fruits and berries, roots and spices, and inulin with a bacterial culture – more than 40 ingredients in total. A serving also provides 180 mg of vitamin C and 45 µg of selenium. There are two flavours to choose from: Just Chocolate (chocolate flavour, 294 g) and Berry Good (berry flavour, 246 g); each tub contains about 30 servings. A serving contains 25 kcal and 2 g of sugars, and according to the manufacturer the product does not contain gluten. The product comes from the Canadian sports brand Mutant and is manufactured by Fit Foods® Distribution Inc. (Jacksonville, Arkansas, USA).

Four blends in one serving

The plant part of Big Greens is divided into four blends, with the same amounts in both flavours:

• Land and sea greens blend (4525 mg) – 3000 mg of land greens (organic alfalfa grass, brown rice, milled flax, sprouted quinoa, matcha green tea, an organic vegetable blend (broccoli, cabbage, kale, carrot, spinach, parsley), artichoke and red beet) and 1525 mg of sea greens: 1000 mg of spirulina, 400 mg of red algae minerals, 100 mg of chlorella and 25 mg of blue-green algae phytoplankton.
• Fruit and berry blend (1239 mg) – 1000 mg of organic fruits and berries (apple, maqui, black currant, pomegranate, mango, blueberry, grape juice, strawberry, acai, acerola, cranberry, raspberry, goji and camu camu), 25 mg of tart cherry, 25 mg of grape skin extract, plus ascorbic acid and L-selenomethionine.
• Roots and spices blend (821 mg) – 400 mg of maca root, 150 mg of KSM-66® ashwagandha root extract, 150 mg of organic milk thistle, 100 mg of turmeric, 20 mg of cinnamon and 1 mg of BioPerine® black pepper extract.
• Inulin and bacterial culture blend (725 mg) – 670 mg of inulin, 25 mg of pineapple, 25 mg of papaya and 5 mg of the bacterial culture Bacillus subtilis DE111® (500 million CFU per serving).

Vitamin C, selenium and calcium

One serving provides 180 mg of vitamin C (225% NRV), 45 µg of selenium (82% NRV) and 130 mg of calcium (16% NRV). Vitamin C is added as ascorbic acid and selenium as L-selenomethionine.

How to use?

Mix one scoop of powder (Just Chocolate 9.8 g, Berry Good 8.2 g) with 250 ml of cold water. If you prefer, the powder can also be mixed into a protein shake or smoothie. The manufacturer recommends using Big Greens every day, and it can be enjoyed at any time – for example with breakfast, alongside lunch or as a snack. The recommended daily dose is one scoop. The product is intended for healthy adults only. If you use other food supplements containing vitamin C or selenium at the same time, take their amounts into account too.

Flavours

Big Greens is available in two flavours with the same plant and vitamin content, but different flavouring ingredients and serving sizes:

• Just Chocolate – in addition to the blends, salt, cocoa processed with alkali, natural chocolate flavouring, magnesium oxide and coffee powder; serving 9.8 g, 294 g per tub.
• Berry Good – in addition to the blends, citric acid, DL-malic acid, natural fruit flavourings and magnesium oxide; serving 8.2 g, 246 g per tub.

Both flavours are sweetened with sucralose and stevia leaf extract. A serving of Just Chocolate contains more sodium (80 mg), potassium and iron than Berry Good.

Who is it for and what to consider?

Mutant Big Greens suits healthy adults who want a convenient way to supplement their everyday diet with a drink made from greens, algae, fruits and berries. The product does not replace vegetables or fruit but is intended in addition to a varied diet. Matcha green tea and the cocoa and coffee powder in the Just Chocolate flavour naturally contain caffeine, the amount of which the manufacturer does not state, so the product is not recommended for children or pregnant women. If pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medication or having a medical condition, consult a doctor before use. The product is made in a facility that also handles milk, soy, fish (collagen) and tree nuts (coconut), so it may contain traces of them. Keep the tub in a cool, dry, dark place out of the reach of children. Do not use the product if the seal is broken or missing. The tub contains a desiccant packet to keep the product fresh – do not eat it.
