NOW Foods True Calm – amino acids, B vitamins and valerian in vegetable capsules

NOW Foods True Calm is a food supplement in vegetable capsules that combines three amino acids – gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine and taurine – with inositol, niacin, vitamin B6, a small amount of magnesium and valerian root. Each capsule contains 200 mg of GABA, 200 mg of glycine, 200 mg of taurine, 100 mg of inositol and 25 mg of valerian root. The capsule also provides 45 mg of niacin as niacinamide and 8 mg of vitamin B6, which is 281% and 571% of the NRV respectively. Magnesium is present as magnesium bisglycinate (TRAACS™). The capsule can be taken one to three times a day, so a container of 90 capsules lasts 30 to 90 days. Niacin and vitamin B6

Niacin (vitamin B3) and vitamin B6 are water-soluble B vitamins that the body does not store in large amounts, so they need to be obtained regularly from food. Niacin is found, for example, in meat products, fish, wholegrain cereals and pulses, while vitamin B6 is found in potatoes, bananas, fish and wholegrain products. In True Calm, niacin is provided as niacinamide; one capsule contains 45 mg of niacin and 8 mg of vitamin B6.

The capsule contains 6.5 mg of magnesium (1.7% NRV), so magnesium is present only in a small amount and the everyday diet remains its main source.

How to use?

Take one capsule one to three times a day, preferably on an empty stomach or just before a meal, and swallow it with a glass of water. Do not take more than three capsules a day. If you use a multivitamin or other food supplements containing B vitamins at the same time, take their amounts into account too. The product may reduce the ability to drive or operate machinery – keep this in mind when planning your day. With three capsules a day the container lasts 30 days, with one capsule a day 90 days.

Ingredients and quality

Besides the active ingredients, the capsule contains only two excipients: a capsule shell made of hypromellose (plant cellulose) and stearic acid of vegetable origin. Glycine is the simplest amino acid in structure, taurine is a sulphur-containing amino acid found naturally in, for example, fish and seafood, and inositol is a compound that occurs naturally in fruit, pulses and cereals. GABA is an amino acid that is not one of the protein-building amino acids. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant whose root has long been used in Europe. The product is not made with wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients, but the production facility also processes ingredients containing these allergens.
