BSN Syntha-6 – protein powder made from several protein sources

BSN Syntha-6 is a protein powder based on milk proteins that quickly makes a tasty protein shake. One 47 g serving provides 22 g of protein, and the 2.26 kg pack contains approximately 48 servings. The protein blend consists of several milk proteins – whey protein concentrate and isolate, calcium caseinate, micellar casein and milk protein isolate – and egg albumen and hydrolysed wheat protein also add protein. According to the manufacturer, the shake has a milkshake-like taste and texture.

Syntha-6 is high in protein: approximately 45–49% of the energy content of the product comes from protein. Sportlab offers three flavours: Chocolate Mudslide, New York Vanilla Cheesecake and Strawberry Cream Swirl. Protein blend and other ingredients

The main part of the protein blend consists of proteins obtained from milk. Whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate are proteins separated from the whey fraction of milk, calcium caseinate and micellar casein come from the casein fraction of milk, and milk protein isolate contains both types of protein. Soy lecithin is added to the protein blend as an emulsifier to help the powder mix evenly with liquid. The ingredient list also includes egg albumen and hydrolysed wheat protein.

The fat comes from sunflower oil powder and medium chain triglyceride (MCT) powder. The thickeners polydextrose and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose give the shake its creamy texture, and the taste comes from flavourings and the sweeteners acesulfame K and sucralose. The chocolate flavour also contains fat reduced cocoa powder, and the strawberry flavour gets its pink colour from the colour beetroot red. In terms of allergens, the product contains milk, soy, egg and wheat (gluten).

Depending on the flavour, one 47 g serving contains 185–194 kcal and 22 g of protein. A serving provides 6.0–7.8 g of carbohydrate, of which only 1.6–1.8 g sugars, and 4.9–6.2 g of fibre. A serving contains 6.4–7.0 g of fat, of which 1.4–1.7 g saturates, and 0.35–0.39 g of salt. 100 g of powder contains 3.5–3.8 g of sugars, so the product is low in sugars. To prepare, mix 47 g of powder (about 1 heaped scoop) with 120–150 ml of cold water and adjust the amount of liquid to taste. For the smoothest shake, shake the powder and water in a shaker.
