NOW Foods Vegetarian Glucosamine '1000' is a food supplement containing glucosamine hydrochloride in vegetable capsules. Unlike most glucosamine products, the glucosamine in this product is not obtained from crab or shrimp shells: it uses GreenGrown® glucosamine which, according to the manufacturer, is made from non-GMO corn. What is glucosamine and where does it come from?

Glucosamine is an amino sugar – a compound whose molecule is built from glucose with one hydroxyl group replaced by an amino group. The human body makes glucosamine itself from glucose and the amino acid glutamine. In nature, glucosamine is abundant in chitin, the material that makes up the shells of crustaceans, which is why most of the glucosamine used in food supplements is made from shellfish.

This product contains GreenGrown® glucosamine which, according to the manufacturer, is obtained from non-GMO corn. The glucosamine is in the hydrochloride form, a stable, pure white powder. NOW Foods developed the analytical method for determining glucosamine content that AOAC International, the international organisation for analytical methods, has chosen as the official industry standard method. No nutrient reference value has been established for glucosamine, which is why the %NRV column of the table shows two asterisks.

How to use?

Take 2 capsules daily with a glass of water. You can take the capsules at once or split them between two meals, for example one in the morning and one in the evening. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you also use other food supplements containing glucosamine, take their amounts into account. The bottle contains 90 capsules, which makes 45 daily doses. After opening, keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place and out of reach of children.
