Joint Defender is a food supplement in capsule form from the US brand Rich Piana 5% Nutrition. The container holds 200 capsules and the daily dose is 8 capsules, so one container lasts 25 days. The daily dose contains ten ingredients: 1500 mg of D-glucosamine sulfate, 1000 mg of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), 1000 mg of collagen type II, 500 mg of chondroitin sulfate, 300 mg of L-proline, 200 mg of L-lysine, 125 mg of hyaluronic acid, 50 mg of cat's claw bark powder, 25 mg of turmeric root extract and 5 mg of black pepper fruit extract.

According to the manufacturer, the glucosamine sulfate is shellfish free. The collagen type II (KollaGen II-xs™) and the hyaluronic acid are obtained from chicken sternum cartilage, and the capsules are made of gelatin. The ingredient list contains no sweeteners or colours.

Ingredients in more detail

Glucosamine is an amino sugar and chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan – the two are often used together in food supplements. MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic sulphur compound. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body; collagen type II is one of its forms, and in this product it comes from chicken sternum cartilage. L-proline is an amino acid found in abundance in collagen, and L-lysine is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce itself. Hyaluronic acid is added as sodium hyaluronate.

Among the plant ingredients, cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a climbing plant growing in the tropical forests of South and Central America, whose bark is used as a powder. The turmeric root extract is standardised to 95% curcuminoids, and the black pepper fruit extract carries the BioPerine® trademark.

How to use?

Take 8 capsules by mouth once a day. If you prefer, you can split the daily dose in two: 4 capsules in the morning and 4 capsules in the evening. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Keep the container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, with the lid tightly closed. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
