Per4m Chocolate Peanut Butter is a protein bar from the sports nutrition brand PER4M Nutrition that combines chocolate and peanut butter flavours. The bar is coated in milk chocolate and has a low sugar caramel flavour layer and roasted peanut pieces inside. One 62 g bar provides 20 g of protein and 200 kcal and contains 1.9 g of sugars.

Protein

One 62 g bar contains 20 g of protein, or 32 g per 100 g. Protein provides about 40% of the energy in the bar, so the bar is high in protein. The protein blend makes up 36% of the bar and consists of milk proteins, crispy nuggets made from soya protein isolate and hydrolysed bovine collagen; the caramel flavour layer also contains whey protein concentrate.

One bar provides 837 kJ, or 200 kcal. It contains 24 g of carbohydrate, of which 1.9 g sugars, 5.5 g of fat, of which 3.2 g saturates, 5.5 g of fibre and 0.36 g of salt. Per 100 g there are 3.1 g of sugars and 8.9 g of fibre, so the bar is low in sugar and high in fibre. The sweetness comes mainly from maltitol, which is a polyol – excessive consumption may produce laxative effects. The oligofructose in the recipe also counts as fibre.

Taste and composition

The outer layer of the bar is milk chocolate (16% of the bar) with at least 42.0% cocoa solids and at least 18.2% milk solids; the chocolate is also sweetened with maltitol. Under the chocolate is a low sugar caramel flavour layer (10% of the bar) made with oligofructose, shea oil, whey protein concentrate, butter and palm oil. The peanut flavour comes from roasted peanuts (1%) and natural flavourings, and cocoa powder (1%) adds to the chocolate taste. The colour comes from plain caramel, calcium carbonate and spirulina concentrate, and sea salt balances the flavour.

Who is it for?

The Per4m protein bar is suitable for adults who want a convenient, protein-rich snack – for example after training, in the middle of the working day or as a sweet treat in the evening. The bar is easy to take to the gym, to work, to school or on a trip. The bar contains milk, soy and peanuts and may contain traces of gluten; according to the manufacturer, it is not suitable for nut and peanut allergy sufferers. Because it contains bovine collagen, the bar is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.

The bar is ready to eat – enjoy it as a snack, for example after training or between two meals. One 62 g bar provides 200 kcal and 20 g of protein, which is worth taking into account in your daily diet. Because of the maltitol, excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.
