Rule1 Whey Protein – protein powder with three forms of whey protein

Rule1 Whey Protein is a powdered food supplement from the American sports brand Rule One Proteins (Rule1) whose protein comes from three forms of whey protein: whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate. On the EU label the product is called R1 Whey Blend. One heaping scoop (33 g) provides 24 g of protein and 130 kcal; a serving contains 2 g of fat, 3 g of carbohydrate and 1 g of sugars. According to the EU label the container holds 68 servings. Sportlab sells the product in several flavours; the composition and nutritional values in this description are those of the Vanilla Ice Cream flavour according to its EU label. The country of origin is the United States.

Protein and calcium

One serving contains 24 g of protein, which accounts for about 74% of the energy content of a serving; 100 g of powder contains 73 g of protein. A serving also provides 160 mg of calcium, i.e. 20% of the nutrient reference value (NRV), and 130 mg of potassium (7% NRV).

Three forms of whey protein

Whey protein is obtained from the whey separated during cheese making, and it contains all essential amino acids. Whey protein concentrate is the less processed form, which besides protein also contains some milk fat and milk sugar. Whey protein isolate is further filtered, so its protein share is higher and it contains less fat and carbohydrate. In hydrolysed whey protein isolate the protein has been partially broken down by enzymes into shorter chains, i.e. peptides. In addition to the protein blend, the powder contains flavourings, lecithin, xanthan gum, cellulose gum and the sweetener sucralose.

How to use?

Mix one heaping scoop (33 g) of powder with approx. 180–240 ml of water, milk or your favourite beverage in a shaker cup or in a glass with a spoon. The recommended daily dose is one scoop. The shake can be enjoyed, for example, as a snack or after training. A drink made with milk contains more energy and protein, as the nutritional value of the milk is added. Always measure a serving with the scoop and close the container carefully after use to keep the powder dry.

Who is it for and what to consider?

Rule1 Whey Protein suits adults who train regularly or want a convenient way to top up their daily protein intake. A serving is low in fat and sugars, so it is easy to fit into different eating plans. The product contains milk (whey protein) and soy and is therefore not suitable for people with milk or soy allergy. The powder is sweetened with the sweetener sucralose. Protein powder complements the diet but does not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
